RAFAEL CORDERO Y MOLINA The Teacher, Rafael
Born in San Juan on October 24, 1790 and died on July 5, 1868. Educator, altruist and humanist, named "the Holly Man" by José Martí. He started the first school in Puerto Rico were children didn't need to pay to attend. He became so prominent that even wealthy people started sending their children to his classroom. He always lived modestly using any donations received to supply the needs of his students, including food. He was teacher to some of the most prominent men in Puerto Rico, such as Alejandro Tapia y Rivera (patriarch of literature), José Julian Acosta (politician and abolitionist), Román Baldorioty de Castro (abolitionist leader), Manuel Elzaburo (founder of the Ateneo Puertorriqueño and leader of the Liberal Political Party). "I don't write anything in this life because I don't want to remember today the good that I did yesterday. My desire is that the night will erase the good deeds that I might have done during the day." He was given the "Award to Virtue" and was beatified in 2004 by Pope John Paul II. | |||||||||||||||
