Cuatro

The cuatro is the National Musical Instrument of Puerto Rico.  It’s a Puerto Rican "original", with 10 strings, arranged in 5 pairs.  Both strings in a pair are played together as one, giving the cuatro music a distinctive sound.  The cuatro has been called “the instrument that sings” as is can follow closely the lyrics in a song.  It’s a must for typical music but it can be used for any musical genre.

An authentic cuatro is a work of art, made by an artisan from one single piece of wood from one of several trees indigenous to Puerto Rico.

In our cuatro programs, the students have the opportunity to learn to play the cuatro using the tablature method, under the supervision of two experienced cuatro players.  The program is offered in Spanish and English.
